Rose Blanche is a young girl growing up in a small town in Germany during WWII. She
experiences the effects of the war through the abundance of soldiers and artillery, families being taken away, and even concentration camps. One day she follows an army truck and discovers a concentration camp near her home. She doesn’t know what wrong, but she notices the children are starving. In her own efforts to help, she takes her own meals to feed them. The next time Rose went to visit the children, the scenery had changed and the camp was deserted and destroyed. Her mother waited and waited for her return, but she never came.
We chose this scene because it demonstrated Rose Blanche’s compassion to help people. Although she didn’t really know what was going on, she still sacrificed her health and safety for the people living in the camps. As readers, we couldn’t imagine how hard it would be to deal with this type of situation; therefore we created the scene and tried to place ourselves in Rose’s shoes.
